Samsung confirms Galaxy S will get Froyo this fall

Through it’s UK Twitter feed, Samsung stated that Android 2.2 Froyo will be coming to all Samsung Galaxy S devices on all networks this fall.  The Galaxy S is already available as the Vibrant on T-Mobile, and the Captivate on AT&T with versions coming to Sprint and Verizon in the upcoming months.

Samsung Intensity II comes to Verizon

Samsung and Verizon announced the online availability of its new Intensity II this week for $50 after rebate and new agreement.  The phone is a sideways slider messaging device with a full Qwerty keyboard, 2.2 inch display, and 1.3MP camera.  The most unique feature is the camera’s infrared night vision mode, allowing the user to shoot photos and video in low light situations.  Other features include stereo Bluetooth, microSD card support up to 32GB and social beat software for social media integration.

FCC approves its first LTE phone

Phonescoop is reporting that the FCC has approved its first LTE capable device on the 1700 and 1900 bands.  The device has been identified as Samsung R900, which was first announced by MetroPCS back in March as the first device in the US to run LTE and CDMA.  Few other details about the device are available, such as design or features, but WiFi is listed in the radios, pointing to it possibly being a smartphone.

First Verizon LTE USB Modem photos surface

BGR received images this week that appear to be of an upcoming USB modem, running on the upcoming LTE network. The LG manufactured device has a swivel cover for the USB end, as well as a SIM slot.

Blackberry App World 2.0 beta now available

Blackberry App WOrld 2.0 beta became available for registered testers of the Beta Zone program.  RIM said that members will receive an email with a link to download the application.  The biggest improvement in the 2.0 version is carrier billing support, though Paypal will still be accepted.  Additional details can be found at blackberry.com/beta

HTC Q2 earnings

HTC posted it’s Q2 earnings as well this week, showing massive growth year over year.  The Taiwanese handset maker made nearly $2 billion in revenues, up over 66% from last year.  The company also reported handset sales 5.4 million, up 2.4 million from 2009.  HTC also reported that its two factories will be ramping up production for the last half of the year, pushing over 3 million devices per quarter.

Security Firm Lookout warns of possible malicious Android application

A wallpaper application in the Android Market has been exposed by mobile security firm lookout as being possibly malicious.  The app, developed by Jackeey pulls information from the users phone, including the SIM card number, voicemail password and other personal details.  The app then sends the information to imnet.us, a site registered in China.  The app was discovered during an analysis of personal data mining within the Android ecosystem.  Google has yet to respond to the situation.

HTC EVO 4G getting Android 2.2 Froyo on August 3rd

Sprint officially announced that the HTC EVO 4G will be its first device to get Android 2.2 Froyo.  Starting on Tuesday August 3rd, Sprint will be pushing out the latest update to the Android Opearting system over the air.  Froyo offers numerous performance updates, as well as Flash support for web browsing.  Sprint is the first carrier to offer the 2.2 update here in the US.

T-Mobile announced accolades for wireless service

T-Mobile continues to provide great customer service, this according to the latest survey from J.D. Power and Associates.  The 2010 Wireless Customer Care Performacen Study – Volume 2 used 9,690 responses from consumers to determine its rankings.  T-Mobile stated that it was the only carrier to earn the highest ranking in the study from the period of January through June 2010.  The study is based on interactions with customer service representatives, and for customers walking into a retail store for service.

CTIA updates “Consumer Code” for Wireless

On Thursday, the CTIA announced that it was updating its Consumer Code for Wireless, helping consumers to make informed decisions when selecting and managing their services.  Developed in 2003, the code is designed to force cellular companies to “adhere to the Code’s 10 points, including commitments to disclose rates, additional taxes, fees, surcharges and terms of service; provide coverage maps; make customer service readily accessible; and allow a trial period for new service.”  Changes include new provisions that cover messaging and data services for both prepaid and postpaid wireless customers. It will be effective on January 1, 2011.
