Wireless charging standard set

26 07 2010

A universal standard for wireless charging was finalized by the Wireless Power Consortiaum, and it will be called “Qi”.  The definition is set to be published at the end of August, and will have a maximum power output of 5 watts.  The WPC says that a series of tests for specification compliance will need to be undergone before a manufacturer is allowed to use the Qi trademark on it’s packaging.  This testing will be done to ensure consumers need only to look for the logo on packaging when purchasing a charger.  This certification process will guarantee fill interoperability between devices with the spec.
