At a press conference today, RIM presented its new Blackberry 6 operating system to debut on its latest device the Blackberry Torch. The OS will also be available for installation on the Bold 9700, 9650 and Pearl 3G handsets within the upcoming months. The new OS features a redesigned interface, expanded messaging for social networking features and RSS feeds, and RIM’s new Universal Search tool. The OS updates the BlackBerry browser with a new Webkit-based app. The new OS changes the familiar BlackBerry design with new Action Menus that are context sensitive, as well as a new multitasking menu. Text messaging has been updated to support a threaded messaging format. The OS also incorporates new multimedia features, which will synchronize BlackBerry devices with a desktop using BlackBerry Desktop Software 6. New BlackBerry devices will be able to synchronize with existing iTunes or Windows Media libraries over Wi-Fi.
While originally thought that 512MB of RAM was needed to run OS6, the Bold 9700 only has 256MB of memory. This means the common requirement to run the OS is the Marvel 624MHz processor.
Correction – The 9650 uses the (many years old) Qualcomm MSM7600 processor at 528MHz.
