About the Wilson Sleek

The Wilson Sleek helps users reduce dropped calls, increase data rates in weak signal areas and originate calls from those dreaded “dead spots”. The Sleek and its external vehicular antenna increases any phone’s output power 20 times to the cell site while improving its ability to hear signals it normally cannot, keeping the user more reliably connected. Designed for simple set up, the Sleek can be easily moved from vehicle to vehicle.

Built into the Sleek cradle is the same technology used with all Wilson bi-directional signal amplifiers. The cradle is ideal for hands free operation in conjunction with a user’s headset or Bluetooth enabled vehicle. Battery life of devices is also extended, as stronger signals to the cellular radio in your device require less power to function.

The package comes with everything you need, and the Sleek is truly plug and play. User changeable adjustable arms allow for nearly every handset on the market.

Installation

Installing the Sleek is a 3 step process.

First, install the outside magnet mount antenna.  The location should be in the center of the vehicle’s roof, 12 inches away from other antennas, and at least 6 inches away from the side windows or sunroof.  Route the coax cable from into the vehicle through a door, trunk or tailgate opening, running it under the door seal if possible for less wear and tear on the cable and a more professional look.

Next, choose a location inside your vehicle where you’d like to mount the cradle/signal booster.  Use the included mounting bracket (or optional accessory kit) to adhere the cradle to your chosen location, using the alcohol prep pad to clean the area before installing.

Finally, attach the coax cable, and mini USB power adapter and ensure that the green light on the left side of the Sleek is on.  This light ensures that the booster is functioning properly.

Wilson Sleek Overview

Use and Results

When i first saw the Sleek at the Fall CTIA conference, I was skeptical that such an inexpensive and small device would provide for the signal enhancement needed.  Though, being a Wilson product, I figured it would be well made, and function as advertised.  After a relatively easy 15 minute installation, I did some tests with both AT&T and Sprint devices, seeing a significant increase in service with both.  During my tests driving around metro Phoenix, I consistently saw 4-5 bars of service with the “new” iPhone 4 signal strength meter.  This means that the service provided was at least -90 dBm or better.  I typically listen to Slacker radio streamed through the 3G connection while on the go.  There was a noticeable increase in the reliability of the connection, and I saw no network timeouts, and skipping between tracks was quick.  Phone calls through my car’s BT system were clear, and even in areas of known low service, the phone sounded great.

The most impressive test was in an underground parking garage at my office.  I typically see “No Service” on all 3 of my phones when I pull in each morning.  Using the Sleek, i was able to pull in Verizon 800 MHz to the point where I was even able to make phone calls.  A test of this is shown in the Overview video above.  However, due to the limitations of the frequencies, the 1900 MHz networks were not able to be amplified enough to allow AT&T or Sprint service to work in these areas.

So how good is the Sleek in enhancing ultra weak or non-existent signals?  Check out this video showing a Blackberry Curve on Verizon’s 800MHz network functioning 2 levels below ground, where phones do not work.

Overall
As someone who has tested out a lot of signal boosting options over the past few years, I am happy to recommend the Wilson Sleek as an economical and effective bi-directional amplifier for in-vehicle use.  The Sleek is easy to install, works with nearly all devices on the market, and provides for strong consistent cellular service while on the go.  The device used for this review was provided by Wilson.
