Ascendo DataVault Password Manager for iOS Review

Ascendo’s DataVault is a Password Management solution to store information such as credit card numbers, security codes, and website login information.  The application is available on the iOS,  and will synchronize with either Mac or Windows computers.  The app uses AES encryption to confidentially store the data, ensuring you’re the only one that sees it.  DataVault Password Manager is available through the iTunes store for $9.99.

How it works
As you try to keep your personal identity protected while on the internet, it’s often difficult to remember the dozens of account numbers, usernames and passwords you create.  Writing them down isn’t usually advised as it opens yourself up to compromise if someone were to gain access to the information.  This is where Ascendo’s DataVault Password Manager comes into play.  The universal application for the iPhone iPad and iPod Touch stores your accounts, passwords and other sensitive information with the same AES encryption used by the US Government.  You can either use the app as a standalone client, or sync it with your desktop for backup and quicker data entry.

When you launch the application, you’re asked to create a password.  You’re also asked to create a hint to jog your memory should you happen to forget the master password.

Once inside, the vault itself has sample information populated of many popular items such as bank accounts, website login information, personal identification and more.  You can either click on and edit any of the existing items, or click the plus sign to create your own.

The app also features a password generator, allowing you to select different characters to create a Strong password that will be difficult to crack.

What’s new in Version 4.3.1
This week, Ascendo has added in new features with its just released version 4.3.1 to separate it from all the other password managers out there.  Updates include:

  • Synchronization with DataVault desktops using Mobile Me.  Mac users will love the fact that you can now keep your data in sync, and constantly backed up with Mobile Me integration.
  • Backup & restore using application file sharing (iOS 3.2 or above). Allows user to make multiple, dated backups and move them to & from desktop using iTunes.
  • Support for multi-tasking in iOS 4 allowing users to switch to another application, copy & paste DataVault contents, then switch back to DataVault without having to login.
  • Timeout supporting iOS4 multi-tasking.
  • Implemented security alert to send email with GPS location of device in case of failed login attempt.

Overall
DataVault from Ascendo is a simple and highly effective way to store and protect your confidential password information.  A lite version of the software is available for tiral, as well as desktop companion apps for both Windows and the Mac.
