With an Engadget post this afternoon, the rumors of the HTC Thunderbolt supporting simultaneous voice and data have been confirmed. Though, the real story here is that Verizon appears to be close to rolling out a simultaneous voice and data network over CDMA/1X Advanced known as SVDO.
Announced back in 2009, 1X Advanced allows 3G CDMA operators to significantly increase the voice capacity of their CDMA2000 1X network by taking advantage of several interference cancellation and radio link enhancements. Among these improvements are base transceiver station (BTS) interference cancellation, improved power control, early frame termination, and smart blanking. The complete set of 1X Advanced enhancements can theoretically quadruple the voice capacity of CDMA2000 1X systems in the same 1.25 MHz of spectrum.
With this, a complementary device enhancement known as simultaneous 1X Voice and EV-DO Data (SVDO) will become available during the same timeframe and will enable CDMA2000 devices to access EV-DO packet data services while in an active 1X circuit-switch voice call.
Though the iPhone 4 will not support SVDO, it guarantees that VZW will be able to handle the number of iPhones about to flood its network. Also, any of the up and coming devices with newer chipsets will have SVDO support, and will be able to use the service. Note in the slide above from Qualcomm’s “what’s next for CDMA”, a reference to “Mobile Rx Diversity” supported with 1X Advanced. Linking this back to the leaked CDMA Blackberry story Crackberry posted last week, the Bold Touch, AKA “Montana” will have “Receive Diversity”? Remember my comment on the Podcast this week about it? Well, this is it, the ability to support simultaneous voice and data.
So far, we don’t know when Verizon is planning to launch the updated network. Though current rumors have the Thunderbolt launching around February 24th, meaning the network could be live by then.

Did this ever get off the ground or was it killed by LTE would would make more sense..
Yes, the 1X advanced network is live. However, there are very few (HTC Thunderbolt is the only one I know of) that support it.
Great question – don’t think that was clarified.
