Google Wallet security holes exposed, Google recommends using a device password

9 02 2012

Multiple security vulnerabilities in Google’s Wallet service have been discovered in the past few days, including one specific to rooted devices, and now one that affects all users. The later allows anyone that has access to the OS on the device to clear the data of the Google Wallet App, then set up new log-in credentials, and get access to the pre-paid funds associated with the account.

Google says this bug will be fixed in an over-the-air update, and recommends setting a device password to protect the phone. Also, Google late Friday disabled the ability to provision new Google Prepaid Cards. Google says they will enable provisioning once a patch has been issued for the Wallet app.

Finally, Google has a toll-free Google Wallet support line for users, allowing the disabling of a prepaid card should a device be stolen.
