The Transportation Department’s Deputy Secretary John Porcari met with Congress Wednesday to propose a ban on any services that interfere with the country’s GPS system. The proposal would create regulations on what types of services could be used in spectrum adjacent to the GPS frequencies, and according to Porcari, “Let operators know in advance which uses in adjacent bands would and would not be compatible with GPS.” The FAA recently also met with congress to talk about the “ruinous effects” that an approved LightSquared network would cause.
LightSquared has been attempting to obtain approval to build a 4G LTE network in the spectrum adjacent to GPS frequencies, though initial testing has shown that interference is present on GPS equipment.
