New SIM format standardized, 40% smaller than the microSIM

1 06 2012

A new standard SIM format has been approved, slimming down the microSIM by 40% to a form factor known as 4FF. The group ETSI, responsible for global standards in Information and Communications Technologies made the announcement via a press release on Friday, saying the new design is 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high, and 0.67mm thick. The new form factor was adopted with the involvement of major mobile network operators, smart card suppliers and mobile device manufacturers.

Press Release:

ETSI Headquarters, Sophia Antipolis, France – 1 June 2012

ETSI has standardized a new form factor (4FF) for the SIM card, 40% smaller than the current smallest design.

At its 55th meeting held on 31 May and 1 June 2012 in Osaka, Japan, ETSI’s Smart Card Platform Technical Committee agreed a new form factor for the UICC, popularly known as the SIM card.

Today’s SIM card designs take up a significant amount of space inside a mobile device. This space is more and more valuable in today’s handsets which deliver an ever increasing number of features.

The fourth form factor (4FF) card will be 40% smaller than the current smallest SIM card design, at 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high, and 0.67mm thick. It can be packaged and distributed in a way that is backwards compatible with existing SIM card designs. The new design will offer the same functionality as all current SIM cards.

The SIM is the most successful smart card application ever. A SIM card is used to securely associate a mobile device with a customer account, preventing fraud and ensuring that calls are correctly routed to customers. It is an essential security feature of mobile networks, and is integrated into every GSM, UMTS and LTE device. Over 25 billion SIM card and derivatives have been produced so far, and the industry continues to issue over 4.5 billion SIM cards each year.

The new form factor was adopted by industry with the involvement of major mobile network operators, smart card suppliers and mobile device manufacturers. The new design will be published in due course in ETSI’s TS 102 221 specification, freely available like all ETSI standards from the ETSI website.

AT&T LTE goes live in Cleveland

31 05 2012

AT&T Thursday announced the LTE service went live in the Cleveland, OH market. AT&T has launched 4G LTE in 39 markets covering over 75 million Americans.

Press Release:

Cleveland, Ohio, May 31, 2012

AT&T* has turned on its 4G LTE network in Cleveland, bringing customers the latest generation of wireless network technology. AT&T 4G LTE provides several benefits, including:

  • Faster speeds. LTE technology is capable of delivering mobile Internet speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. Customers can stream, download, upload and game faster than ever before.
  • Cool new devices. AT&T offers several LTE-compatible devices, including new AT&T 4G LTE smartphones and tablets, such as the HTC One™ X, Samsung Focus® 2, Nokia Lumia 900, Samsung Galaxy Note™, and Pantech Element™ tablet.
  • Faster response time. LTE technology offers lower latency, or the processing time it takes to move data through a network, such as how long it takes to start downloading a webpage or file once you’ve sent the request. Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming, two-way video calling and telemedicine.
  • More efficient use of spectrum. Wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and LTE uses spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience.

“We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Cleveland responds to what customers want from their mobile experience — more, faster, on the best devices. Cleveland customers now have our fastest available speeds with 4G LTE, and customers across Ohio are enjoying fast speeds on the nation’s largest 4G network,” said Larry Evans, vice president and general manager, AT&T Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

AT&T’s 4G Network

AT&T customers have access to the nation’s largest 4G network, covering more than 260 million people. According to recent third-party speed tests by PCWorld, AT&T 4G LTE speeds are faster than the competition. Testing in 13 cities showed that AT&T’s combination of 4G LTE and HSPA+ technologies delivered faster download speeds than any other carrier tested.

Even as 4G LTE expands, AT&T customers are able to enjoy widespread, ultra-fast and consistent 4G speeds on their compatible device as they move in and out of LTE areas. AT&T has two 4G networks that work together for customers, LTE and HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul. With other carriers, when you travel outside of their LTE coverage area, you’re on a much slower 3G network.

“The investment we’ve made to our networks in Ohio alone has equated to a million dollars every single day of the last three years, so bringing 4G LTE to our state is just the latest example of this significant infrastructure investment,” said AT&T Ohio state president Tom Pelto. “Ohioans enjoyed more than 1,500 upgrades to our wireless network in 2011, and those enhancements continue with today’s announcement.”

“In an information-driven economy, the ability for all the people of our community to have access to the latest communications technology is critical,” said Joe Roman, president and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Partnership. “Investments like this assure that businesses of all sizes can compete effectively in a global economy. I would like to thank AT&T for this investment in our community.”

“I’m proud to say that North Olmsted is among the communities enjoying this cutting-edge technology,” said North Olmsted Mayor Kevin Kennedy. “AT&T’s investment in our community is further demonstrated by the recent opening of a new retail store here. Both are examples of the company’s overall commitment to the Cleveland area, and builds on our reputation as a strong region for business investment.”

Limited 4G LTE availability in select markets. Deployment ongoing. 4G LTE device and data plan required. Up to 10x claim compares 4G LTE download speeds to industry average 3G download speeds. LTE is a trademark of ETSI. 4G speeds not available everywhere. Learn more about 4G LTE at att.com/network.

Google brings call screening control to Google Voice

30 05 2012

Google Tuesday added new features to Google Voice, allowing better contact management and screening abilities. According to Google:

Many users have asked us for controls aimed at people who are NOT in their address book. So today, we’re adding two groups of callers for Google Voice users:

  • People in your address book: this allows you to customize the experience of all contacts in your address book. This also works by exclusion. For example, you can set a special greeting just for people in your address book, or screen anyone not in your address book.
  • For anonymous callers: these are callers who do not have a caller ID. They sometimes appear as unknown, or restricted, depending on why the caller’s number is not shown. You can use this group to for example screen any call without a caller ID.

Those two new groups are specific to Google Voice and can be managed from the group tab.
